The much-delayed, renamed, and rescheduled comedy filmed in and based on a true story that actually happened in Charlotte, North Carolina, Relativity Studios, slowly recovering from bankruptcy, has released a new trailer for Masterminds, starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Ken Marino, Kristen Wiig, and Wiig’s Ghostbusters co-stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.
Formerly titled Loomis Fargo the film tells the story of a real life robbery that took place in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1997, when David Scott Ghantt, the driver of a Loomis Fargo & Company armored car grabbed $17 million, stuck it in a company van, and drove off with the money, committing the third largest cash robbery in United States history at the time.
Ghantt left the stolen cash with some coworkers and then headed for Mexico where he planned to hide out for a few months until the heat around the heist cooled down. While Ghantt was in hiding, his co-conspirators were supposed to wire him the money, but they instead plotted to have him murdered while blowing through millions of dollars living like rock stars in North Carolina.
All three were eventually arrested less than a year later.
Wilkesboro, North Carolina native Zach Galifianakis will play Ghantt, opposite Owen Wilson as an accomplice.
Kristen Wiig will play the workplace crush of Galifianakis, who uses her feminine wiles to him to join her and her accomplices in their plan to rob a bank vault, but has no plans to link up with him once the deed is done, and Jason Sudeikis plays a hitman in the film.
In this action comedy based on true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime.
Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurdly faulted heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash…only problem is he foolishly hands the money over to this wild group of double crossers and has been set up to take the fall. With the bandits blowing the millions on lavish and ridiculous luxuries, they leave behind a glaring trail of evidence. Now on the lam and in over his head, David must dodge the authorities, evade a hilarious hit man, Mike McKinney (Jason Sudeikis), and try to turn the tables on the ones he trusted most.
The movie was filmed in Charlotte and much of western North Carolina, including Asheville, Waynesville, Franklin, and Swannanoa.
Masterminds will (finally) arrive in theaters on September 30.
